BINTULU: Preschools should be recognized as an entity of the overall school system and not as a separate unit.

Bintulu Education Office technical and vocational unit head Ismawi Bujang said it was sad to note that some schools treated preschools as separate units.

Ismawi said preschools were vital as it is through them that pupils are exposed to a formal study environment and become better prepared to enter Primary 1.

He said the target was for pupils entering Primary 1 to have mastered the 3Ms (writing, reading, counting).

“The government has spent a lot of money to manage pre-schools,” he said, adding that special concept or working papers should be introduced by preschool teachers and headmasters.

He said all parties must work together to develop ideas abd approaches on how far to merge pre-school interests in annual school activities or events.

Ismawi was representing Bintulu Education officer Fatimah Matair at the closing of the divisional level pre-school carnival and PKBP (Pendidikan Khas Bermasalah Pembelajaran) class at SK Tanjung Batu recently.

“In 1992 we started it with only 10 classes of pre-schools but to date we have 41 pre-schools with 54 classes,” he said, adding that seven schools had PKBP classes for students with learning difficulties.

He said through PKBP, students with such difficulties were given more attention through special learning methods and techniques.

“They (parents) must send their children to PKBP class as the expert teachers are implementing different approaches of teaching method which suits them.

“Parents must plan their children’s future and to do that they must register their special children in PKBP class,” said Ismawi.

He added that the pre-school carnival was part of activities held to scout for talented children and expose them to interpersonal techniques and effective communication.

Winners in all competitions will represent the division at the zone-level competition.

Bintulu will host the state-level pre-school carnival in July or early August.
